The Harmonic Convergence was the end of twenty-two cycles of 52 years each, or 1144 years. The twenty-two cycles were divided into thirteen "heaven" cycles, which began in 843 A.D. The thirteen heaven cycles ended in 1519, which began the first of nine "hell" cycles.

The date of the ending of the thirteen heaven cycles of Quetzalcoatl is of great historical significance even in the Western world. The greatest irony is encompassed by the fact that it was on April 21, 1519, Good Friday, that Hernan Cortes set the flag of the Cross on Mexican soil, at a site that was to become the Spanish city Vera Cruz (True Cross); at the very same time, Martin Luther was writing his epoch-making tract, Concerning Christian Liberty.

Even more awesome is the fact that Good Friday, April 21, 1519, corresponded in the Mexican calendar to the day Ce Acatl (One Reed) dedicated to the principal god/hero of the ancient Mexicans, Quetzalcoatl. Furthermore, the ancient Mexican seers had prophesied that this particular day would mark the end of a "heaven" period consisting of thirteen 52-year cycles and the beginning of a major "hell" period consisting of nine 52-year cycles, or 468 years. Knowing this full well, the Aztec emperor, Moctezuma, in actuality an adversary and conqueror of the forces of Quetzalcoatl, hoped that Cortes himself would be none other than the vanquished Quetzalcoat, the god returned, for at least, according to tradition, Quetzalcoatl was not a vengeful god.

Moctezuma and the Mexicans soon learned that he represented something much worse: Cortes was their own god of war disguised by the banner of the "Prince of Peace."

The nine "hell" cycles completed themselves on August 16, 1987 A.D., Harmonic Convergence. This year marked the beginning of the final 25 years of the traditional Mayan Long Count. It also marked the end of the 16th Kalachakra cycle of the Tibetans.

The Mayan Long Count is a count of days from 3113 B.C. to December 21, 2012. The days are divided into thirteen Baktuns, and each Baktun is made up of 144,000 days. Each Baktun is then divided into twenty Katuns, each Katun is 7,200 days each which is approximately a generation, or twenty years.

The division of Baktuns and Katuns is the exact same way the Tzolkin is divided, except that in the Long Count of the thirteen baktuns each square represents 7,200 days instead of representing one day. You can learn more about the Tzolkin in this small tutorial.

So what will happen in 2012? Only time will tell!

The Harmonic Convergence also began the final 26 year countdown: from 1987 to 2013, the beginning of the Yellow Galactic Seed year and a new 5,200 year cycle.
